HOW TO use the Microsoft 98/NT L2TP-IPSec Client with NAT32.

The Microsoft documentation for the 98/NT L2TP-IPSec Client states that the driver cannot function on a computer that has third-party network address translation software installed. That statement is inaccurate, as the driver will work with NAT32E.

Here's how to make it work:

  • Install the driver as per Microsoft's instructions.
  • When installation completes, reboot the system as requested.
  • Before you configure NAT32E, reboot the system again.
  • The second reboot is required because after the first reboot, the L2TP driver's installation is still incomplete, and NAT32's NDIS3PKT driver has already started. But on the second reboot, NDIS3PKT will pick up all the needed bindings correctly and NAT32E can be configured without problems.

To uninstall the software, use Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Note that on Windows 98 platforms, the Net and NetTrans bindings are not adjusted correctly. One way of correcting this is to run Control Panel, Network, and then remove the TCP/IP protocol for each adapter. Then reboot Windows and again run Control Panel, Network, and this time click Add, Protocol, Microsoft, TCP/IP. This will add new TCP/IP bindings to all adapters. Don't forget to configure each LAN adapter so that the lengthy delays on reboot are avoided while Windows tries to contact a DHCP Server. Then reboot Windows.

If the above method fails, run regedit.exe and find these keys:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Sevices\Class\Net\xxxx HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Sevices\Class\NetTrans\xxxx

Delete each entry xxxx which refers to the Deterministic Networks DNE Pro protocol. Then reboot Windows and add the TCP/IP stacks as above.
